No I’m not kidding. Her latest song “Flowers” has been trending at No.1 for weeks and there’s a lot we can learn from her team’s marketing strategy: 1. Tell a Relatable Story: Miley has recently been through heartbreak and this song is about her coming out on the other side, stronger and more self assured. The journey is relatable and the outcome is aspirational. Marketing Takeaway: Talk to you consumers about their life stories and obstacles. Show how your product/service can help them overcome those obstacles. 2. Evolve with the Times: “Self love” is a major theme these days as people aren’t as eager to “settle down” by a certain age. Miley capitalizes on this sentiment very well. Marketing Takeaway: Your brand’s voice must evolve with the times. If you are a beauty brand, talk about how your brand gets inclusive beauty and caters to people of various cultures. 3. Controversy Marketing Works (when done right): People had a lot of questions about her divorce and she answers them all in this song. While she used controversy to get eyeballs, it was the empowering message that made folks love the video. Marketing Takeaway: Can your brand talk about a controversial issue in a sensitive and mature way? This is a tough one to crack, but you can take notes from Nike’s Dream Crazy collaboration with Colin Kaepernick. 4. Timing Matters: She released the song on her ex’s birthday, which made fans go crazy and organically spread the song like wildfire (much like fire that burnt her home in Malibu, ok sorry). Marketing Takeaway: Did a cricketer just score a century? Maybe your Edu-Tech brand should congratulate him and remind your consumers that your product can help their child score a 100 on her exam. 5. Easter Eggs: She pulled a Taylor Swift by including several easter eggs in her video. Marketing Takeaway: Use easter eggs to make your audience re-watch your content and also draw in a larger group of curious people who want to know what their friends are obsessing about. PS: Flower sales in the UK increased by 52% after the release of this song. Seems like a missed collab opportunity for Ferns N Petals :P #creativity #digitalmarketingstrategist #contentmarketingtips #tipsforsuccess #storytelling
